Fika in Qatar
“In Qatar we also have the practice of taking time to slow down and enjoy the company of others.” states Sarah. A favourite beverage is "qahwa" (Arabian coffee). Lightly roasted green coffee beans are ground to produce to a golden aromatic brew. The fragrance is enhanced by the addition of cardamom or saffron. Qahwa is served from a thermos called a "dallah" into little cups called "finjan". A second dallah is filled with "shay" (sweet red tea) which is served in slightly taller cups.
Qahwa and shay are typically enjoyed with fresh dates. Guests are also offered a selection of fruit, nuts, chocolates, and sweet and savoury snacks. Homemade treats are often served.
Serving coffee is a cherished practice in Arab societies. In 2015, the traditional way of preparing and serving qahwa was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
